For the very first time that consuming beet root juice will assist the body to cope up with low quantities of oxygen at high elevations has been found by scientists here at a recent study.

Mountain climbers have consistently fought having a fundamental issue which is altitude sickness, caused by lower air pressures which influence the power of our bodies. The easiest way to minimise the chance is just spending enough time up high to let the entire body to make alterations to reduce oxygen levels, or acclimatisation.

A team of researchers chose to see nitrate-rich beet juice might change acclimatisation -day excursion at 3,700 metres and to Kathmandu. Regular blood vessel function is dependent upon the body’s capacity to naturally create a compound nitric oxide (NO).

Creation of sufficient levels of NO at high elevations is a challenge since oxygen is required by natural NO generation. However, the body has a “backup system” for NO generation at elevation, also it’s here that beet juice will help. The secret ingredient is high rates of nitrate, which the body is able to convert to NO.

Previous research indicates that blood vessels often contract at high elevation. For the study, researchers measured blood vessel functionality using a standard evaluation of arterial endothelial function, a flow-mediated dilatation evaluation (FMD).

The researchers, from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) as well as the Mid-Sweden University, demonstrated that ingestion of organic nitrate-rich beet juice restored reduced blood vessel function at high elevation.

Both women and men were examined to check their blood vessel function, before and during the high elevation excursion. High elevation as expected, made blood vessels contract. If beet juice could make the blood vessels relax again to examine, the evaluation areas were examined after drinking two kinds of beet juice using a 24 hour break between evaluations.

Among the juices contained high levels of nitrate while one other kind had no nitrate in it (placebo). The study participants nor the researchers knew before blood vessel function was measured, what kind of beet juice each man drank, as well as the juices (nitrate-rich versus placebo) were given in a haphazard sequence.

The research revealed that beet juice with high levels made while the placebo did have no or very little effect on the blood vessels to relax and return to ordinary function.
