In today’s world manhole covers which are used for preventing someone from slipping into the sewers are not something special in UK. However in Japan the covers made for manholes are beautifully crafted pieces resembling a work of art.
One can see magnificently designed covers covering manhole spread all around the country. The designs of covers are also made according to the local landscape which includes the neighboring flora and fauna. The plan of custom made covers surfaced during 1980.
The idea was forwarded by a bureaucrat when strategies for renovating the sewer lines in the country caused an indignant reaction. Therefore on a street level the manhole covers were proposed to be designed in an artistic manner. Currently around 95% of the 1,780 municipal corporations in Japan possess their uniquely patterned covers.
