INS Kochi, India’s Biggest Warship & It’s Recent Commissioning– A Brief Account
The Defense Minister Mr. Manohar Parrikar commissioned India’s biggest warship INS Kochi here in the naval dockyard in Mumbai on 30 the September 2015. The stealth-guided missile destroyer is the second in line from Kolkata class Guided Missile Destroyer under Project 15A. The deal for three ships with reference to Kolkata class was made as a follow-up activity after the legendary Delhi-class destroyer ships that were commissioned in the Navy a decade before.
The warship was designed by Directorate of Naval Design, the in-house institute of Indian Navy and was constructed by Mazagaon Dock Ship Builders Limited, Mumbai. It is named after the lively port city of Kochi.
The vessel integrates novel design concepts for better survivability, stealth, maneuverability and exclusive sea-keeping. The imposing ship presents a spanning 164 meters in length and 17 meters at the beam with a displacement capacity of 7,500 tons. INS Kochi is loaded with a collection of high-tech weapons and sensors, which are very significant as they are created of indigenous constituents.
The ship has a battery of deadly weapons in her hold, which includes the presence of highly efficient vertically launched missile system to carry on successful long distance engagement of shore to sea-based objectives. This is a rare variety of warship available in the world and second of its kind in Indian Navy to contain Multi-Function Surveillance capacity and Threat Alert Radar for providing necessary data to Long Range Surface to Air Missile System.
