We are aware that plant-derivative substances, sometimes known as chemo preventive agents are helpful in preventing cancer, rather than chemotherapy, substances intended to treat cancer. These are normally low-cost materials, easily available and do not have any or limited toxicity.
Chemo preventive agents are classified in different categories according to the method of action: antiproliferatives, antioxidants and carcinogen blockers. Curcumin is common to all three categories due to its multiple action mechanisms.
Curcumin plays a dominant role in helping block every step of cancer transformation, proliferation and invasion, but may be of help ahead of carcinogens reaching our cells. In 1987, a study was made investigating effects of curcumin on the mutagenicity, the DNA mutating capability of some toxins and concluded that curcumin was an useful antimutagen against many environmental and average mutagenic and cancer-causing materials, which was in vitro, i.e., in Latin sense “in glass” meaning in a test tube or petri dish. However, it might be seen while some toxic waste spill occurs or any nuclear accident takes place, or else no one would voluntarily expose to carcinogens, unless the regular smokers! We can make the experiment on smokers, who receive carcinogens through their veins every day.
A little concentrated curcumin supplement or the plain turmeric that you buy at a store and under a teaspoon every day signifying that dietary turmeric is a valuable anti-mutagen.
