First Underwater Tunnel in India at Amravati, the New Capital of Andhra Pradesh

It is great news that the first underwater tunnel in India is expected to come at Amravati, the new capital of Andhra Pradesh.  The proposed underwater tunnel will run under the river Krishna and would be 3 km long. The master plan for transport in the new capital area is being designed by connecting roadways with water tunnels going under rivers to link the capital city with business hubs in Vijayawada.

It would be a great moment when the entire construction of underwater tunnel and road connectivity is completed for the first time in India. The world has only 200 such type of river tunnels and the new underwater tunnel in Amravati aspires to be included in the list. The government of Andhra Pradesh made the public announcement of the project only on last Saturday, which would be designed by experts from Singapore.

The river tunnel would ultimately turn to be a major attraction for tourists, which is also in the minds of the state government. Tourists would be attracted with the new construction, which is scheduled to surface near Ibrahimpatnam situated in the fringes of Vijayawada city. People go to enjoy the backwaters of the Prakasam barrage near Vijaywada, which would be extended to Ferry village adjacent to Ibrahimpatnam. The unique feature of the river tunnel will also attract motorists who would find the aquatic life exciting as the tunnel is made of transparent material.

The government of Andhra Pradesh is ready to seek approval for the project from the central government so that the tunnel is constructed under river Krishna. Officials are also excited about the project because the underwater river tunnels would be quite economical in comparison to the construction of an over bridge at the same place.
