World’s Second Largest Diamond Was Discovered In Botswana

While we pull our hair out on whether India’s ever likely to return its lost glory – the Kohinoor diamond – the world’s active discovering larger stone. And this one’s so large, it is been declared as the planet ‘s second-largest diamond!
The dazzling beauty was found in Botswana (Africa) by a Canadian mining company, Lucara Diamond Corporation.

This comes as an amazing discovery, particularly for Botswana, for the 1,111-carat diamond that is sized at 2.5 inches by 2.2 inches, is the nation’s largest find yet. And would you understand how large the Kohinoor was when it had been mined? 793 carats, uncut. Places things in perspective.

In a press statement, CEO and Lucara President, William Lamb said, “The need for the retrieval of a gem quality rock bigger than 1,000 carats, the biggest for more than a century and the continuing restoration of high quality rocks from the south lobe, cannot be overstated.”

“Our focus on mining the south lobe, which will be providing worth beyond anticipation, has been perfectly timed with all the commissioning of our recent plant changes, enabling the retrieval of the big, high quality special diamonds,” he further added.

The name of the planet ‘s biggest diamond rests with the 3,106.75-carat Cullinan Diamond that was found in 1905 in South Africa. Estimated to be around a whopping $400 million, we can not help but wonder about the cost of this latest glossy-boy on the block.
